I love summer just as much as the next guy. But man, fall is my jam! When the temperature drops and the leaves change color, I get giddy for all the things that come along with it. Here in Minnesota, the cooler nights made an appearance weeks ago, so fall has been on my mind for a little while now. It got me thinking about all the things I look forward to in this season. Combines plowing the fields, the scent of apple cinnamon candles burning on the counter, sleeping with the windows open, sweatshirts, bonfires... I could literally go on and on. But there are four things that I love about fall that stick out more than the rest.
1. Apple Picking
Apple picking has been a family tradition since my oldest daughter was itty bitty. That's more than ten years! Usually, sometime in late September, we dedicate a whole day to picking apples with our kids, and they love it just as much as we do. We tend to scout out the orchards that make an event of it all. There's live music, tractor rides, petting zoos, corn mazes and a country kitchen with fresh baked goods. Although, we usually skip over the country kitchen and bake our own pies with our fresh picked apples!
2. Fall Markets
Shortly after we moved to Minnesota, we stumbled across this quaint, outdoor fall market called Mama's Happy. It hosts about 75 vendors that set up shop to offer everything from handcrafted soaps to refinished furniture and knitted hats. Just like our favorite orchards, this place brings the whole experience with live music and assorted food trucks. It feels unnatural to walk through this market without a pumpkin spice latte in hand. Some of my all time favorite pieces in the farmhouse, like the bench in the photo below, have come from the Mama's Happy Market. More specifically, from my favorite vendor of all time, Bauer Bros. The market wouldn't be complete without a visit with these gals.
3. Home Decor
The part that I especially love about decorating for fall is using cozy elements and pairing textures. Throw blankets, pillows and quilts are scattered everywhere, so there's never a shortage of warmth to snuggle up with. Swapping out throw pillows is an inexpensive and easy way to add pops of color and totally change the look of a room. The texture in this season is sooo good! Mix and match with wicker baskets, wood crates, burlap sacks, flannel blankets, cornstalks, apples, pumpkins... The possibilities are endless on this one, folks. I love to make my home feel like a comfortable, inviting place to rest. And when it starts to get cool outside, home is exactly where I want to be.
4. Dressing for Fall
I'm one of those people that's always cold. We all have that one friend, and I'm it. So when the fall hits and it's socially acceptable to don layers, I'm a happy girl. Sweaters and scarves are a staple, and booties have become a new favorite. I'm drawn to the earthy colors for fall, like yellows, greens and browns. And since I wear jeans every day of my life, it's easy to pair any of those colors with denim. Choosing neutral staple pieces like jackets, boots, and handbags will make getting dressed (and looking put together) so much easier.
So here I am, soaking up every bit of fall because it will be gone in a blink, and before you know it, Minnesota will be a frozen tundra. At which point, you can find me hibernating under anything that will keep me warm.
